Did you know?
12,000 Residential Customers Have Enrolled in Clean Steps Wind Power Program. They're helping to reduce CO2 emissions by purchasing 50% or 100% wind power from local wind farms to meet their electricity needs.

How It Works

When you decide to switch electricity suppliers you can also decide if you want to go green.

Your local provider (Pepco, BG&E etc.) either generates or purchases coal or oil products to produce 100% of the electricity that is delivered to your home or business.

When you agree to use WGES as your supplier, WGES purchases 95% of the energy you need from coal or oil generated electricity and the other 5% of the energy from local wind farms. In both cases, the electricity you pay for is delivered to the grid and your local provider delivers it to your house.

50% or 100% Green Power

An increasing number of customers are looking for additional ways to go green. For them we have some other options. When you review the pricing you will notice that we also offer a 50% and 100% wind product.

What this means is WGES will purchase 50% or 100% of the energy you use from wind sources and will deliver that energy into the grid.

You don’t actually get the kilowatt of wind power you bought, but the amount of kilowatt’s you use are put in the grid and it therefore reduces the amount of coal or oil kilowatt’s needed to supply everyone on the same grid as you.

Below is an example of how energy works:

Four different sample sources of energy are fed to the power grid: coal, oil, wind and nuclear. All the energy is merged together in the power grid.

As a home owner or business you decide what percentage and what type of energy you want sent to your home or business.

Power Distribution Grid

Percentages of energy are for example and do not reflect actual percentages.

The result is less coal and oil is used if more locations choose a green product. This reduces the "Carbon Footprint" on the environment.

So if you decide to go with the standard offer you will be 5% green and if you want to pay a little more you can be 50% or 100% green for your electricity generation.

Wondering why WGES purchases no wind power in D.C., Maryland, or Delaware? That’s because the region has no operating large-scale wind farms.
