What is Energy Deregulation?
It is the opening of a market to competition in an industry that was traditionally regulated. The electric industry has currently gone through a restructuring which allows utility customers to purchase electricity and gas from a different supplier while using the distribution lines (poles and wire) of the local utility.
What has stayed the same in electric and natural gas service with deregulation?
Your current Utility Company, continues to deliver electricity and natural gas to your business or home. Your local utility company still responds to service interruptions and continues to maintain the poles, wires and pipelines. You will continue to receive the same reliable service you are used to with your local utility company, regardless of which energy provider you receive supply from.
Will electric markets become completely unregulated?
No. An energy service such as electric service consists of two parts: generation and distribution. Generation is the producing of electricity. This part of the service is the portion that will be "deregulated". The delivery of electricity - a service that distributes electricity to end-use consumers - will remain regulated by the state public service commission. Therefore, restructuring may be a more proper term to describe the changes occurring in the electric and gas industry.
If a storm damages the lines, who will be responsible for restoring my power?
Your present utility will continue to provide delivery of electricity through its transmission and distribution lines. Those services will continue to be regulated. The transmission and distribution utility will be responsible for repairing its lines and restoring service.
Who will send me my monthly bill?
Your local utility will continue to send you one bill for both your supply and delivery. And, you still just make one payment to your local utility.
Will I notice a change of service when I switch my energy provider?
No. No matter which energy provider you choose, your energy will continue to be delivered safely and reliably by the local utility company.
Who do I call in case of emergency?
You will continue to call your local utility’s emergency hotline. Your local utility will still own and operate the equipment to deliver the electricity and natural gas safely and reliably to your home or business.
What happen if I sell or move out from my house?
There will be no termination fee.
